Hiking Boots

Waterproof, leather and lightweight hiking boots for every level, every route and every season.

Browse our full range of hiking boots — waterproof, leather and lightweight options built for Irish trails, mountain routes and everything in between. From well-maintained lowland paths to technical ridges, we carry boots suited to every level of walker and every type of terrain.

  • Waterproof hiking boots — GORE-TEX® and waterproof membrane constructions keep your feet dry on Ireland's wet ground and unpredictable weather without sacrificing breathability. The most popular choice for year-round hiking across all conditions.
  • Leather hiking boots — Full-grain and nubuck leather options from Meindl and Merrell deliver long-term durability and a fit that moulds to your foot over time. The traditional choice for serious hillwalking and extended use.
  • Lightweight hiking boots — Designed for speed and agility on maintained trails and active day hikes. Options from Salomon and Columbia suit walkers who prioritise comfort and pace over maximum support.
  • Outsole grip — Vibram® and Contagrip® rubber outsoles provide reliable traction on wet rock, mud and loose terrain — the real conditions you encounter on Irish hillsides.
  • Ankle support — Mid-cut and high-cut constructions protect and stabilise your ankles on uneven ground, particularly on longer routes and steeper ascents.

We stock hiking boots from Meindl, Merrell, Salomon and Columbia — a range selected for performance, fit and value at every level. For more technical and winter mountain routes, see our mountaineering boots. Complete your setup with hiking socks, footbeds and insoles or gaiters for the best possible fit and trail performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ireland's variable terrain and reliably wet weather make waterproof construction the most important single feature for most hikers here. A GORE-TEX or waterproof-membrane boot from Merrell or Meindl will handle the majority of Irish conditions across all seasons. For technical routes — Carrauntoohil, the Mournes, Glendalough's upper ridges — a stiffer leather or semi-stiff boot offers better support and durability. For well-maintained long-distance routes like the Wicklow Way, a lighter, more flexible boot from Salomon or Columbia is often sufficient. The right boot comes down to your terrain, pace and how much distance you plan to cover.

For most hiking in Ireland, waterproof boots are strongly recommended rather than simply optional. Boggy ground, wet grass and unpredictable rainfall are realistic conditions on the majority of Irish routes, including in summer. GORE-TEX® boots combine reliable waterproofing with breathability, keeping your feet dry without overheating on warmer days. Non-waterproof boots can work on well-surfaced, low-altitude paths in dry conditions, but for anything involving mountain terrain or multi-hour walks, waterproofing will make a significant difference to your comfort and, on exposed routes, your safety.

The terms are often used interchangeably and in practice the overlap is considerable. Hiking boots tend to be more technical — stiffer soles, higher ankle support and constructions built for uneven, off-trail terrain and longer days out. Walking boots are generally a lighter, more flexible build suited to well-maintained paths, countryside walks and lower-intensity use. For hillwalking and mountain terrain in Ireland, a proper hiking boot with waterproofing and solid underfoot support is the right choice. For lower-grade trails and regular countryside walking, a lighter boot will do the job comfortably. If you're unsure, a mid-cut waterproof boot covers both uses well.

The right brand depends on your foot shape, hiking style and budget. Merrell is a strong all-round choice — reliable waterproofing, good fit out of the box and solid value across a wide price range. Meindl is our premium option, with traditional German craftsmanship and exceptional long-term durability, particularly well-suited to serious hillwalkers covering longer distances. Salomon excels in lighter, faster designs for trail hiking on maintained routes. Columbia offers durable, accessible performance at a strong price point. All four are well-tested in Irish conditions and represented across our range.

Hiking boots should fit snugly around the heel and midfoot with no slipping, while leaving around a thumb's width of space at the toe to allow for foot swelling on longer outings. Your toes should never press against the end of the boot, particularly on descents. Try boots on later in the day when your feet are at their largest, and wear the socks you intend to hike in — a good hiking sock makes a meaningful difference to fit and comfort. Leather boots in particular benefit from a gradual break-in period before taking them on longer routes.

We feel that hking boots are the better choice whenever the terrain is rough, uneven or wet, when you're carrying a heavier pack, or when ankle support and protection are a priority — which covers most hillwalking and mountain routes in Ireland. Hiking shoes are lighter and more flexible, suiting well-maintained trails, shorter day hikes and faster-paced walking where mobility matters more than protection. For most Irish upland hiking — anything involving mountain terrain, boggy ground or significant elevation gain — boots are the more practical and safer choice. If you primarily walk on lower-altitude maintained paths, hiking shoes may be sufficient.
